via LIBREF-L

ALCTS webinar: Linked Library Data: Tuning Library Metadata for the Semantic Web

Date: March 16, 2011

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 2pm Eastern, 1pm Central, noon Mountain, and 11am Pacific Time.

Description: This webinar will provide a brief introduction to the linked data design pattern and the principles and terminology of the Semantic Web. Examples will focus on the metadata and value vocabularies used in various domains and the emergence of this pattern in libraries.

Additionally, the webinar will look at how linked data into the ongoing development of RDA and IFLA’s current efforts to harmonize the FRBR family of standards. The role of metadata registries in managing large and complex metadata vocabularies will be addressed. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of how linked data principles can broaden the utility of metadata standards like RDA by allowing communities to utilize only the parts of the standard that are of value to them.

Audience: This webinar is for anyone wanting an introduction to Linked Data, RDF, and the Semantic Web, and who is interested in how library data models and metadata standards could evolve to work more effectively in this space. No prior knowledge of RDF or Semantic Web is required.

Presenter: Corey A Harper has worked as the Metadata Services Librarian at New York University since 2007. Prior to that, he was a metadata librarian and a digital library developer at the University of Oregon. He has been actively involved in the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) since 2002, and has focused his professional work on discussing Semantic Web technologies and Linked Open Data principles with librarians in a variety of venues.

ALCTS e-forum: Developing a Library Metadata Policy

via LIBREF-L

Developing a Library Metadata Policy

October 13-14, 2010

Hosted by Melanie Wacker and Susan Massey

Please join us for an e-forum discussion.  It’s free and open to everyone!

Registration information is at the end of the message.

Each day, sessions begin and end at:

*       Pacific: 7am – 3pm
*       Mountain: 8am – 4pm
*       Central: 9am – 5pm
*       Eastern: 10am – 6pm

As libraries move toward using non-MARC metadata schema to describe their collections in addition to MARC format cataloging, many discover the need to develop a local metadata policy.  This e-forum is intended to be a two-day session to discuss the following topics, as well as other related ideas:

*       What kinds of information do you think should be included in a library metadata policy?
*       What metadata policies that other libraries have applied successfully are available as models for developing a policy?
*       If your library uses a metadata policy, does the scope cover only your library’s collections, other departments within your institution (such as an institutional repository), or a cooperative effort of multiple libraries? In situations with multiple sources of data input, are there issues with policy enforcement?
*       Does the policy focus on one metadata schema and one resource format, or does it address multiple tools applied across a variety of formats? Are there guidelines for choice of schema depending upon the format?
*       Is consistency of headings a concern of the metadata policy? How is name authority control or choice of controlled vocabulary addressed in an environment that uses multiple tools and formats?
*       Does the policy provide for data cross-walking between schema or for a unified search environment?  Are there specific elements that are mandatory for all records to enable user access?

Melanie Wacker is the Metadata Coordinator in the Original Serial & Monograph Cataloging unit of the Butler Library, Columbia University Libraries. She has previously worked as a cataloger at Columbia University Libraries and at the Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Melanie is chair of the CUL Metadata Working Group and currently serves on the RLG Partners Working Group on Social Metadata.

Susan A. Massey is the Head of Cataloging at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, and has also worked in cataloging at the Historic New Orleans Collection, the University of Alabama, Florida Institute of Technology, Brevard Community College, and the University of Texas at San Antonio.  She currently participates on the Metadata Subcommittee of the Florida Council of State University Libraries Technical Services Planning Committee, and is the vice-chair of the ALCTS Cataloging & Classification Research Interest Group.

*What is an e-forum?*

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion.  Most e-forums last two to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it’s free.  See a list of upcoming e-forums at:
http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alcts/confevents/upcoming/e-forum/index.cfm

*To register:*

Instructions for registration are available at: http://bit.ly/eforuminfo. Once you have registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you choose to leave the email list.  Participation is free and open to anyone.

Directions in Metadata
with Karen Coyle

Bibliographic data is in the midst of a major transition. With the emergence of the semantic web, the very purpose of this data is evolving from an entity meant for interpretation by humans to one meant for interpretation by machines.

Karen Coyle, digital library consultant and bibliographic data expert, will discuss the future of metadata and its role in bibliographic data and the semantic web. Coyle will address what the major transformations in the use and structure of data already underway mean for libraries, and what librarians can do to prepare, adapt, and take advantage of new possibilities.

Open Q&A and discussion will follow the presentation.

Date:
Thursday, April 1st

Time:
4 p.m Eastern
3 p.m. Central
2 p.m. Mountain
1 p.m. Pacific

webinar on metadata

Join NISO for our November webinar Data, Data Everywhere featuring Migration and System Population Practices.

When:
November 11, 2009
1:00 – 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)

About the Webinar:
The scope and scale of metadata repositories continues to grow, with increasingly heterogeneous data and complexity both on the ingest side (e.g., bibliographic metadata) and in inter- and intra-organizational exchange of usage, patron, purchase, and accounting data. While data format and exchange standards are a given, how do policies, implementations, and standards interact? What are some examples of effective alignment of standards, policies and implementation, and what challenges remain?

Agenda:

Data quality, policy, and large-scale data flows How do regional consortia establish and implement policies to allow them to cope with increasing amounts of data in a widening variety of formats?

— Hilary Newman, Vice President of Implementation Services, Innovative Interfaces, Inc.

Academic library perspective Individual research libraries provide local, customized services for their audiences that are based upon large quantities of data — hopefully of high quality and supported by easy-to-use tools and processes provided by vendors and consortia. What are the successes, stress points, and failures from the perspective of the academic library?

— Maribeth Manoff, Coordinator for Networked Service Integration, University of Tennessee, Knoxville

— Robert McDonald, Associate Dean for Library Technologies, Indiana University

For more information and to register, visit the event webpage (http://www.niso.org/news/events/2009/ datasystems09). Registration is per site (access for one computer) and includes access to the online recorded archive of the webinar. NISO and NASIG members receive a discounted member rate. A student discount is also available. Can’t make it on the 11th? Register and gain access to the recorded archive for one year.

This webinar is sponsored by Ex Libris.
