LYRASIS has two series of upcoming events that may be of interest to you and your members. See below for details/links to registration. Please feel free to forward.

Make the move from server serfdom to the cooperative cloud

To help you get the knowledge you need, OCLC and LYRASIS have partnered to present a series of FREE, regionally based member discussions, Moving Library Cooperation to Web Scale. We invite you to come discover how Web scale is revitalizing traditional services through shared workflows, activities and data. At these events, you will build a community of support as you tackle various scenarios alongside colleagues and experts, while planning your library’s first steps toward Web scale.

Through your participation in our Moving Library Cooperation to Web Scale series, you and your staff will:

·         Hear from library representatives who are en route to Web Scale, tech gurus and Web-scale advocates.

·         Take a virtual tour of a live OCLC Web-scale Management Services site and consider viable (plus pie-in-the-sky) options for your library.

·         Discover new possibilities and discuss strategies for overcoming obstacles.

·         Identify what you still need to find out—as part of your journey to the cloud.

As web users become more savvy and demanding, libraries are looking for new ways to allow patron participation and keep their websites dynamically and collaboratively up-to-date. Mashups—web applications that combine freely available data from various sources to create something new—can be one very powerful way to meet patrons’ expectations and provide exemplary web-based service.

This is a two day, two hours each day live online class:

Nicole C. Engard, editor of “Library Mashups: Exploring new ways to deliver library data” (http://mashups.web2learning.net), will explain  what mashups are, how they can be used and share examples from libraries around the world.

Day One:
In the first half of this workshop, attendees will learn about some of the tools they can use to mash up library data with content from the web to reach more patrons. Examples include using maps to enhance library data, using Flickr for digital collections and creating library websites with data from several information sources.

After attending this talk, librarians will be able to:

  • Define what a mashup is and identify mashups on library sites and the web.
  • Find tools and APIs to gather data for their own library sites

Day Two:

After learning the basics and seeing examples from other libraries around the world, attendees will watch hands on examples of mashing up data with tools like Yahoo! Pipes, Delicious, Diigo, Flickr and others.

After attending this workshop, librarians will be able to:

  • Pull data from other sites into a your website
  • What mashups are, how they can be used and share examples from libraries around the world.

This live online class one 2-hr. module provides an introduction to RDA (Resource Description and Access), the proposed next edition of cataloging rules to replace AACR2 (the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed.). We’ll look at how RDA’s rules are structured, its basis in the Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records (FRBR), its overarching principles (such as “transcribe what you see”), and the data elements it specifies as core to a bibliographic record.
The online RDA Toolkit will not be utilized in this class, which focuses on RDA’s content and not the functionality of the online tool.
