Announcement/Call for Presentation

LLAMA/NMRT New Leaders Discussion Group invites the submission of proposals for presentation at its meeting at the 2011 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA.

The LLAMA/NMRT New Leaders Discussion Group is an exciting new joint venture between LLAMA (Library Leadership and Management Association) and NMRT (New Members Round Table). This newly created group is designed to provide opportunities for discussion and networking among new librarians, new members of LLAMA and/or NMRT, librarians who are making career shifts, experienced leaders, and anyone interested in developing leadership skills. Discussion topics are chosen based on issues of interest to the members of the group.

At this year’s Annual conference, we are interested in topics focusing on “Developing Leadership Skills for Early Career Librarians”. We seek proposals for presentation that address this topic from a variety of angles, including (but not limited to):
• Developing leadership skills in library school. (It could be from a student or faculty perspective)
• Leadership skills and experience employers look for.
• Advice for career changers – transferring leadership skills from a different field..
• What leadership skills should one develop early in the career? and how?
• Early career leadership opportunities.
• Early career leadership development planning.
• Transitioning from early career to mid-career.

We look for presenters to share their experience (it could either be a positive experience or a lesson learned), helpful tips, and advice on the topics. The presenter should plan to speak for about 7 -10 (max) minutes. The presenter is also expected to lead and facilitate a discussion group on their topic in the second half of the meeting. There will be approximately 30 minutes of presentations. After the presentations, we will break into small, rotating discussion groups to allow more in-depth discussions of the presentation topics and other theme related topics as determined by attendees’ interests.

Proposals are due by April 1, 2011. Notification of acceptance will be made by May 1. Please include the following information in your proposal:

1. Your name, title, institutional affiliation (or LIS program), mailing address, phone number, and email address.
2. The title and a 200 word (max) description of your presentation. The description should clearly identify the topic of your presentation, your personal experience with this topic, and how it will contribute to the professional development of new and aspiring leaders.

Keep in mind that there will be no use of technology for these presentations as they are meant to be informal in nature. Any information (notes, further reading, etc.) presenter/discussion leader would like to share could be posted on LLAMA’s website.

The LLAMA/NMRT New Leaders Discussion Group is scheduled to meet on Saturday June 25, from 4pm – 5:30pm.

CFP: book chapters for Embedded Librarians

Call for Proposals: Book Chapters for Embedded Librarians

Editors of the forthcoming ACRL publications book Embedded Librarians: Moving beyond one-shot instruction, to be published late 2010,  seek proposals for chapters from skilled librarians who have researched and/or implemented an embedded librarian program. The book will provide an overview of embedded librarianship within higher education.  Chapters are sought about strategies for and experiences of creating a long-term embedded presence in multiple non-library settings, both online and in-person.

Potential topics include:

  • Defining “embedded librarianship”
  • History and background of embedded librarianship
  • Embedding in the first year experience
  • Embedding within departments
  • Collaborating across departments to encourage embedded projects
  • Embedding in online course management systems
  • Embedding in the enterprise
  • Assessing the success of embedded projects
  • Future opportunities in embedded librarianship


Prospective authors should email a brief CV, a writing sample, and a one-page proposal for their chapter to ckvenild@uwyo.edu or kcalkins@uwyo.edu. Proposals are due by January 30, 2010.

Call for Proposals: The Acquisitions Institute

The Acquisitions Institute at Timberline Lodge is seeking proposals for audience-engaging presentations or panels on all aspects of library acquisitions and collection management.  The Acquisitions Institute is the pre-eminent Western North America conference on acquisitions and collection development. The Institute is a small, informal and stimulating gathering in a convivial and glorious Northwestern setting.  This three-day conference focuses on the methods and madness of building and managing library collections and information content.

ACRL invites proposals for 2011 National Conference

ACRL invites proposal submissions for the ACRL 2011 National Conference to be held in Philadelphia, March 30 – April 2, 2011.  The full text of the Call for Participation is online.

The ACRL 2011 National Conference theme, “A Declaration of Interdependence,” reflects the idea that in order to be successful, libraries must cooperate with each other and interconnect with their campus communities.  ACRL invites individuals to submit their most innovative or radical proposals to help make ACRL 2011 a truly revolutionary conference.

Session Formats
Proposals are sought for a variety of formats including contributed papers, cyber zed shed presentations, panel sessions, preconferences, virtual conference webcasts, workshops, poster sessions, and roundtable discussions.  Descriptions of session formats are online.

Conference Tracks
Submitters are encouraged to investigate the issues and topics described as part of the conference tracks.  Track descriptions are available online.

The conference theme, Bridging and Beyond: Developing Librarian Infrastructure, spans the information literacy landscape, looking for the best in library instruction.

Presenters are encouraged to develop unique and creative proposals related to the theme. Proposals should showcase effective and innovative practices, provide useful information that participants can use at their libraries, support collaboration, and be as applicable as possible to a wide range of academic institution types. Successful proposals reflect elements of one of seven themes:

* Structural Supports: Assessment and Evaluation focuses on the use of peer evaluation, evaluating instructional tools, assessing student needs and learning, and judging information literacy initiatives.

* Infrastructure: Designing Enhanced Learning Spaces looks at how specially designed spaces improve and/or impact information literacy or instruction initiatives.

* New Materials: Innovative Use of Instructional Technology examines ways new technology is being utilized in the classroom.  This track can include looking at the building, implementation, or maintenance of technology in the classroom.

* Expansion: Utilizing Nontraditional Instruction Methods asks presenters to show the unique ways they approach information literacy.  The emphasis is on creative teaching strategies, curriculum designs, and engagement exercises.

* Bridges Near and Far: Forming Innovative Collaborations showcases connections with others to further information literacy initiatives. Connections and collaboration can be of all sorts, including within the library or library system, within the campus community, or with connections located off-campus.

* Removing the Tolls: Employing Effective Leadership illustrates the different ways leadership can eliminate barriers to create an improved environment for information literacy initiatives.

* Reinforcements: Curriculum Lesson Plans “to Go“ has the presenter share a proven lesson or unit plan, including processes and materials.  Session participants should be able to go back to their respective institutions and readily implement the lesson plan.

SESSION FORMATS

Two types of proposals will be accepted.

* Presentation: A 60-minute session that includes time for a 45-minute presentation and 10-15 minutes of question and answer. Most feature a successful program, practice or key issue related to instruction or information literacy. Presentations are intended for an audience typically of 50-70 people. Presenters should include in the proposal description the topic and an outline of the presentation.

* Interactive Workshop: A 60-minute session where the presenter facilitates a learning environment in which attendees develop or explore teaching and/or research techniques. Presenters are expected to facilitate a well-planned and interactive session. Workshops are intended for an audience typically of 30-60 people. Proposals should include a description of the topic and details on how the presenter will make this session a “hands-on” experience for attendees.

In addition, there will be Poster sessions. Students currently enrolled in a Master’s program in library and information sciences along with librarians in resident or intern programs will be invited to propose poster sessions. Call for Proposals – 5th Canadian Learning Commons Conference
A Journey in Progress: Been there! Done that! What’s next!

The Queen’s Learning Commons invites submissions for its program for the 5th Canadian Learning Commons Conference, June 16-18, 2010 to be held at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario.

In 2003, Scott Bennett of Yale University suggested that one of the core activities of a learning commons is to support “collab­orative learning by which students turn information into knowledge and sometimes into wisdom.” ( www.clir.org/pubs/reports/pub122/pub122web.pdf,6)

In the seven years since Bennett made that statement, many changes have taken place:

  • new methods of communicating
  • new models of discovery and research
  • new standards of accountability for colleges and universities including skills-based outcomes
  • changes in teaching methodologies such as inquiry-based learning
  • changes in the way course material is delivered
  • changes in the way students learn and think
  • financial constraints

Where does all this leave the learning commons and what does it mean for strategic positioning for the future?   Is it still our role to support?  What does it take to help the current generation of students turn information into knowledge? How will we get there? Can we take the lead?

We welcome submissions that take either a broad or a specific approach to these questions.  Share your innovative ideas for providing services, programs, study and collaborative learning spaces; approaches to long-term planning; ideas for dealing with the current financial constraints; new collaborations.

Proposals will be accepted for presentations (20 minutes for presentations + 10 minutes for questions) and posters.  Ten posters will be selected for five-minute presentations during a one-hour session.   Deadline for submission of proposals is Wednesday, December 9, 2009.   Please include a title, an abstract (no more than 250 words for presentations and 100 words for posters), biographical information of presenter(s) and send to CLCC5@queensu.ca .  Successful proposals will be identified by Friday, January 15, 2010.

North American Serials Interest Group 25th Annual Conference

The 2010 Program Planning Committee (PPC) invites proposals and/or program ideas for pre-conference, vision, strategy, and tactics sessions. The Program Planners are interested in hearing from publishers, vendors, librarians, and others in the field of serials and electronic resources about issues relating to scholarly communication, publishing, licensing, and cataloging.

Please keep in mind the following:

* The Program Planning Committee will review all submitted proposals for their content and timeliness.
* PPC may work with potential presenters to blend or refocus proposals to maximize their relevance to attendees and avoid duplication.
* Proposals based on descriptive and experimental research findings are encouraged.
* Time management issues generally limit each session to two speakers. Panels of four (4) or more speakers must be discussed in advance with the PPC (prog-plan@nasig.org)
* Proposals may be suggested as one type of session and/or format and ultimately be accepted as any one of the other types of sessions or formats; this decision is the purview of the Program Planning Committee.
* Vision and Strategy speakers presenting original content are required to produce a written paper for the conference proceedings.
* NASIG has a reimbursement policy for conference speakers whose organizations do not cover expenses. Details about reimbursement are available on the NASIG website.
* The Program Planning Committee hopes to notify applicants of the status of their proposals in December 2009.

Library Technology Conference, 2010 – Call for Proposals

The Library Technology Conference 2010 Committee invites you to submit proposals for presentation at the Library Technology Conference to be held at Macalester College, St. Paul MN, March 17-18, 2010.  To submit a proposal, please visit the conference website at:

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
This popular and growing two-day conference is now in its third year. The conference includes keynote, concurrent, hands-on and poster sessions highlighting many of the technologies affecting how users interact with libraries, as well as how libraries are using technology to create new and better ways to manage existing resources.  This Conference is an opportunity for library staff and the technologists who support them to discuss how these technologies are affecting library services; to see examples of what libraries are doing with these technologies; and to allow participants to learn specific skills or knowledge that they can take back and adapt for use within their own library.

Sessions are geared toward all types of libraries, a wide range of topics and varying skill levels. Conference sessions will include a mix of traditional lecture-style presentations, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and poster sessions. Anyone interested in the changing technologies that are affecting libraries should plan to attend.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR FROM YOU:
We are looking for a balance of sessions that will appeal to a broad library audience and provide a combination of “right now” solutions and “see the future” technology presentations.  Projects can be already implemented or still in process. Long-term experiments that stretch the boundaries of how we work, or will work, in libraries, as well as “out of the box” solutions and ideas for libraries struggling to keep up are welcome topics.  What has worked for you?  Why?  What brought you to that solution?  What benefits has it provided to your organization?

POSSIBLE PROGRAM TYPES:

Traditional Session – 60-minute lecture-style presentation highlighting a technology resource or service.

Workshop Session – 90 minute session offering participants a hands-on experience working with a technology or learning details of a service. Be sure to tell us if there is a maximum number of participants you feel would be appropriate.  Available lab space may ultimately decide the class size.

Group / Panel Discussion – 90-minute group discussion involving a variety of presenters focusing on single topic or specific technology-based service or innovation; should also include an opportunity for audience discussion.

Poster Session – posters and handouts describing and explaining a technology resource or service offered in a library.

PRESENTER COMPENSATION:
Presenters who participate in a presentation or poster session will be given one- or two-day registration, based on these guidelines:

*       If presenting a full session, a presenter will be given free registration for both (2) days of the conference.
*       If an institution submits a panel format with three (3) or more participants from the same institution in the same session, each panel representative will be given free registration for one (1) day only.

CFP: Midwest Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association, Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2009

While the official final deadline was April 30, 2009, I hope that you will consider submitting a proposal for a paper to be presented at the Midwest Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association (MPCA/ACA) Conference, to be held in Detroit over Halloween Weekend.

Papers can be written from the perspective of any discipline, and, as a librarian and Area Chair for Magazines and Newspapers, I encourage my fellow librarians to contribute to this area of scholarship. For example, I have presented papers on such diverse topics as “Gilmore Girls” slash fiction on the Internet, the pressures of perfection in parenting magazines, and the cult of celebrity as represented by popular magazines.

You do not need to live in the Midwest to participate or be a member of  MPCA/ACA — presenters come from all over the country, and from as far away as Australia.

On a personal note, I have found the scholars at the MPCA/ACA to be a knowledgeable and supportive group. They have provided great insight into and suggestions for further areas of research.
