Privacy and Library Learning Analytics

We are pleased to announce this final call for expressions of interest for participation in a free e-learning course on “Privacy and Library Learning Analytics.”  The course will take place from October 1st, 2022 through November 13th, 2022. There are 50 slots available and there is no fee to participate.

This course is an offering of Prioritizing Privacy, a multi-faceted continuing education program that will train academic library practitioners to comprehensively address privacy and other related ethical implications of learning analytics projects. Prioritizing Privacy is funded by an IMLS National Leadership Grant and more information is available on this website.

The six-week e-learning course will guide participants in exploring learning analytics, privacy theory, privacy-by-design principles, and research ethics. Participants will develop and present their own personal “Privacy Sourcebook” to document their learning and guide their practice after the course is complete. The course format is cohort-based and asynchronous, offered in the learning management system Canvas and structured by weekly deadlines and required readings, learning activities, and online discussions. Additional information about the curriculum is available on the project website (prioritizingprivacy.org/curriculum).

Comments from participants in previous courses:

  • The course content was excellent.
  • I have a concrete product from the course that I can use to keep moving forward.
  • The lectures, readings, and Privacy Sourcebook were all really well done.
  • The Privacy Sourcebook as a reflection and next steps tool were extremely valuable for me.
  • Both of the instructors are experts and I thought they explained something complicated like LA [learning analytics] in a way that is accessible to a wide variety of audiences.

To apply for this free opportunity, fill out the application to participate by September 7th:

Applicants will need to confirm that they:

  • Work in an academic library in the United States.
  • Have an interest in learning about academic libraries and learning analytics.
  • Have an interest in learning about privacy and other ethical considerations in learning analytics.
  • Commit to spending up to 5-6 hours/week during the course to engage in the community of practice and complete the learning activities.

Anticipating that there may be more interest than we can accommodate, selected participants will be notified in early February and others will be informed of the waitlist.

If you have any questions about this project or the application to participate in the e-learning course, please feel contact Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, PI (ljanicke@illinois.edu) or Kyle Jones, Co-PI (kmlj@iupui.edu).

The Privacy Sourcebook has also been released as an open educational resource. Additional course materials will be made available later this year, which might be used for self-paced learning or by a library team self-organizing training. We will also be exploring options for future formal offerings of the e-learning course and welcome inquiries from those who might wish to contract for a custom, hosted offering.
