Attend this session to learn answers to these questions and more.

Kraft will provide tips and tools for checking out possible hazards around the house, dealing with mold and salvaging keepsakes, documenting damage for insurance purposes, and keeping your family safe.

Learning Outcomes:

- Steps to take in preparing for and responding to a disaster
- Basic understanding of dealing with mold
- Simple techniques for salvaging keepsakes
- Awareness of available disaster assistance

Presenter: Nancy E Kraft, Head of Preservation at the University of Iowa Libraries, is responsible for directing the preservation and conservation of the library collections at the University of Iowa. In 2009 she received the Midwest Archives Conference Presidents’ Award for her extraordinary work following the historic levels of flooding that struck Iowa in the summer of 2008. Kraft has assisted in many disaster recoveries, large and small, including the Iowa Floods of 1993 and 2008, the University of Iowa Old Capitol fire, the water soaked State Historical Society of Iowa building, and a mold outbreak in the Law Library’s rare book room. Her passion is assisting the individual to preserve his/her keepsakes.

11:00a.m. – 11:50a.m. Welcome & Keynote

This Is Your Brain on Technology: The Technology Exposure Effect (TEE)-Deborah Gagnon, Ph.D., Wells College

Is that GPS on your dashboard shrinking your hippocampus? Or is it really the Holy Grail that the spatially challenged among us have been searching for our whole lives? The media offer a bewildering array of doomsday (as well as more benign) prognoses of the effect that excessive exposure to technologies – Twitter, Facebook, GPS, Second Life, etc. – present to our cognitive and neural functioning. This talk will examine questions like these and reveal how technology may be changing users’ (and your) perception, attention, memory, reasoning, decision making, and problem solving processes.

12:00p.m. – 12:50p.m. Avoiding the Social Media Graveyard-Meredith Farkas, Portland State University

There has been a lot of buzz about social software over the past few years, and many libraries have devoted significant staff time toward implementing 2.0 technologies. To successfully implement 2.0 technologies, which libraries must adopt rapid user-centered change, experimentation, and a pragmatic view of technologies. One look at the number of abandoned library blogs, wikis and Twitter feeds tells us that successful implementation of social technologies requires more than simply installing software. Farkas include practical tips, illustrated with examples from libraries already on the road to 2.0 through innovative practices.

1:30p.m. – 2:20p.m. GEO on the Web: Implications for Library Strategies – Stephen Abram, Gale Cengage

Is geography important to your library? It is so important that many libraries have rich and detailed branch strategies. How does this translate to the web? Can you tune your services when you know where your user is located? How do geotagging and geocoding influence the search results you see in Google, et al? Is this trend tied to mobile and other devices? Just think about Foursquare, Gowalla, the newly added geotagging in Facebook, Twitter and all of your cell phone pictures. What does it all mean and what are the implications for your library? Think about it. Check out this webinar session from wherever you are and get the fast take on the basics of geo and the new world of location-based services for search and the web.

2:30p.m. – 3:20p.m. Community Centered Library Innovations – Sarah Glogowski, Tompkins County Public Library

The way in which libraries provide information services is changing rapidly. Once quiet places of study and reflection, libraries today are often the center of community life. Learn how to make your library the essential place to go for both young and old through innovative services and technology. From a Books at Birth project, to online teen book reviews, and from a popular town-gown Community Read to technology petting zoos, see what innovative services the staff of the Tompkins County Public Library are providing. Cooperative relationships between TCPL, TC3, Cornell, and many area agencies will be highlighted to show how innovation is a community collaboration.

3:30p.m. – 4:20p.m. Gaming in Libraries – Scott Nicholson, Syracuse University

Over the last few years, a growing number of libraries of all types have discovered the power of gaming programs. These programs, which center around bringing patrons together to engage with each other through both digital and tabletop games. During this talk, Dr. Nicholson will present a brief history of how libraries have used games, will discuss data from studies about different ways that libraries use games, and will help guide libraries through the process of developing and running a gaming program.

http://www.americanlibrariesmagazine.org/news/ala/upcoming-rusa-online-courses-cover-reference-and-business-reference-basics

CHICAGO — Public librarians, academic librarians and library support staff are encouraged to sign up for the next offerings of Business Reference 101 and The Reference Interview, two popular online classes offered by Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), the home for reference within the American Library Association.

The next offerings include:

Business Reference 101, May 9 – June 3, 2011

Appropriate for librarians and library staff of all types who wish to acquire business reference expertise, Business Reference 101 will demystify such topics as SIC, NAICS codes, ROI and 10ks. Students will also have access to such proprietary business reference databases as Standard & Poor’s Net Advantage and Thomson/Gale’s Business &Company Resource Center. This consistently sold-out course will be taught by Celia Ross, past chair of RUSA’s Brass section and an experienced facilitator and practitioner in the business reference field.

The Reference Interview, May 2 – June 10, 2011

This comprehensive course covers such reference interview topics as cultivating an approachable reference environment, successful questioning and listening techniques and appropriate follow-up methods. Staff of all levels at all types of libraries will find this content, presented in a multi-media format, helpful in their day-to-day engagement with library patrons. Instructor David Tyckoson, associate dean at the Henry Madden Library, Cal State—Fresno and immediate past-president of RUSA, has an extensive resume in the field and was awarded the 2005 Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award for distinguished contribution to reference librarianship.

All courses will be administered using Moodle, an online course management tool. Online learning offers flexibility for busy professional schedules and facilitates interaction between instructors and students with weekly assignments, discussion boards and chat sessions.

Online registration is now open for all of these opportunities, with significant cost savings for RUSA members.
Make the move from server serfdom to the cooperative cloud

To help you get the knowledge you need, OCLC and LYRASIS have partnered to present a series of FREE, regionally based member discussions, Moving Library Cooperation to Web Scale. We invite you to come discover how Web scale is revitalizing traditional services through shared workflows, activities and data. At these events, you will build a community of support as you tackle various scenarios alongside colleagues and experts, while planning your library’s first steps toward Web scale.

Through your participation in our Moving Library Cooperation to Web Scale series, you and your staff will:

· Hear from library representatives who are en route to Web Scale, tech gurus and Web-scale advocates.

· Take a virtual tour of a live OCLC Web-scale Management Services site and consider viable (plus pie-in-the-sky) options for your library.

· Discover new possibilities and discuss strategies for overcoming obstacles.

· Identify what you still need to find out—as part of your journey to the cloud.

Patron-Driven Acquisitions: Where do I start and how do I know when I’ve arrived?

April 12-13, 2011

Hosted by Angela M. Carreño and Nancy Gibbs

Please join us for an e-forum discussion. It’s free and open to everyone!
Registration information is at the end of the message.

Each day, sessions begin and end at:

Pacific: 6am – 2pm
Mountain: 7am – 3pm
Central: 8am – 4pm
Eastern: 9am – 5pm

Description

The convergence of ebook availability, patron interest in e-books, new business models and the economic crisis has accelerated library adoption of Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA). This change has been facilitated by customized patron-driven acquisitions programs from some major library book distributors and aggregators. The adoption of PDA has also been facilitated by a shift in collection management philosophy away from “just-in-case” collecting to a “just-in-time” strategy for providing access to collections. How should libraries balance patron driven acquisitions with more strategic decisions to prepare their collection for the future?

Topics to be covered include:

* Budgets and how to budget
* Campus sharing of costs (specifically between separately administered libraries on a campus)
* Profiles – are they different for different disciplines? Are certain LC classes totally excluded (art, music)? What happens to your approval plans?
*       Foreign or domestic plans
* ILL PDA – in print or in e format
* E Reserve PDA – will this meet the needs on a short term basis?
* Reference Collection PDA – is this a possibility? Could it be a browsable, ever changing collection? If so what are the associated costs for collections budget and for staff time?
* Dual formats and Bundled pricing – could there be deep discounted pricing for print accompanying e formats?
* Vendors/providers – who is doing what? Do you go through vendors or direct to publishers, or both?
* Implications for collections – does this mechanism skew the collection?
* Marketing and promotion – if you promote it will you run through your budget even faster than thought? What happens if you don’t promote it?
* Consortia applications – if you have rich consortia obligations for shared borrowing what happens when your collection is all electronic?
* Mechanics – marc records, link resolvers, monitoring, statistics, pricing models, duplications, weeding; levels of use (single user, multiple user), purchase versus subscription

Nancy Gibbs is head of Acquisitions at Duke University Libraries, She has held previous positions at Penn State University Libraries, Auburn University, and at North Carolina State University Libraries. She is the past chair of the Acquisitions Section of ALCTS and the 2007 recipient of the ALCTS Leadership in Library Acquisitions Award. In 2008, she taught an Acquisitions Practices course to students in the United Arab Emirates at Al-Ain University and continues to speak about acquisitions practices, electronic books, and electronic resources at local, national and international conferences. She serves on advisory boards for a number of library vendors and is a consultant in the field of acquisitions, publishing and vendor relationships.

Angela M. Carreño is the Head of Collection Development for the Division of Libraries at New York University. Angela has led, coordinated and supported the expansive growth of licensed electronic resources at NYU since 2000. She is the primary licensing officer for the Division of Libraries and assumes primary responsibility for consortial collection development commitments. She represents the Libraries on collaborative projects with other campus units and other libraries. Since 2007 she has intensified work on the NYU electronic book collection in close collaboration with NYU’s branch campus library in Abu Dhabi, a library with an e-preferred collection policy. Angela is a member of the Springer Library Advisory Board; the Oxford Library Advisory Group and the Brill Library Advisory Group.

*What is an e-forum?*

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it’s free. See a list of upcoming e-forums at: http://bit.ly/upcomingeforum.

*To register:*

Instructions for registration are available at: http://bit.ly/eforuminfo. Once you have registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you choose to leave the email list. Participation is free and open to anyone.
