NISO August Webinar: E-Books: A Rapidly Evolving Marketplace

NISO’s August webinar will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time) on the topic of E-Books: A Rapidly Evolving Marketplace.

While e-books have been slow to garner wide adoption, the past few years has seen greatly expanded interest and use of e-books. New models and applications are growing exponentially. This webinar will explore several key aspects of the e-book community: sales and licensing models for libraries, and developments with e-book file formats. Building on the free NISO/BISG forum (see: http://www.niso.org/news/events/2009/ala09/bisg) held at the American Library Association Annual Meeting in Chicago, this webinar will focus on the business applications of creating, selling, and using e-books.

Topics and speakers are:

– Creation, Formatting, and Distribution Options for E-books
Tino Fleischer, Atypon Systems, Inc.

– Business Models and Approaches for Selling E-books
Anne Orens, Independent Consultant

– E-books in the Library: Successfully Reaching the End User
Sue Polanka, Head, Reference and Instruction, Paul Laurence Dunbar Library, Wright State University

For more information and to register, visit the event webpage (http://www.niso.org/news/events/2009/ebooks09). Registration is per site (access for one computer) and includes access to the online recorded archive of the webinar. NISO and NASIG members receive a discounted member rate. A student discount is also available. Can’t make it on the 12th? Register and gain access to the recorded archive for one year.

Free ACRL OnPoint Chat today – Are Reference Desks Passé?

via cjc-l

The next installment of the ACRL OnPoint Chat series, “Are Reference Desks Passé?,” will take place today, Wednesday, July 29 at 12:00 p.m. Central time (10:00 a.m. Pacific | 11:00 a.m. Mountain | 12:00 p.m. Central | 1:00 p.m. Eastern).

Many academic libraries are eliminating reference desks and focusing on referrals, roaming reference, satellite reference and/or virtual reference instead. This session will explore the causes and consequences of this trend. During this OnPoint chat, consider the following questions: (1) What is driving the trend toward elimination of reference desks? (2) Are alternate services sufficient to meet patrons’ needs? (3) Without desks, how do reference staff stay in touch with patrons’ needs and wants? Kansas State University’s Danielle Theiss-White, General Reference Coordinator, Jason Coleman, Service Coordinator, and Laura Bonella, Reference Generalist, will convene this OnPoint chat.

ACRL OnPoint is a live series of informal monthly text-based chat sessions. All ACRL OnPoint chats are free and open to the public. Sessions are unmoderated, one hour in length and take place in a Meebo chat room (no audio or video). Chats are limited to 80 concurrent participants and will be delivered on a first-come-first-served basis. For additional information, including access information, visit the OnPoint website at www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/events/onpoint/index.cfm.
