Moving Mountains and Crossing Rivers: A Symposium Exploring Library Courier Services

Moving Mountains and Crossing Rivers
A Symposium Exploring Library Courier Services
September 25-26, 2008

Following up on the overwhelming success of the first Moving Mountains Symposium that you attended in Denver in the fall of 2006, we are coming together again this year to discuss the physical delivery of library materials.

Join us in September in the Greater Cincinnati area and find out what is happening with delivery systems throughout the country.

Some of the topics that we will explore include:

* Trends in courier services
* Best practices of existing courier systems
* Funding the service
* Rural delivery
* How to start a courier service
* Understanding contracts
* Training staff to negotiate courier services
* Marketing your service

The keynote speaker on the first day will be David Millikin, Product Manager for Library Logistics with OCLC. Mr. Millikin is an expert on the supply chain industry, libraries, collection management, and logistics partner relationships. He infuses his knowledge of the general business environment into the business of libraries. In his address, Mr. Millikin will provide facts and figures about the supply chain industry, describe how the two worlds of logistics and libraries seem to be colliding dramatically and quickly, and illustrate how libraries should keep attention and resources focused in the coming years, while doing business in the new environment. Some topics that will be included are fleet management, courier management, bill payment processes, cooperative collection management, the library supply chain, and upcoming supply chain game-changers like digitization and print on demand.

Additional programs for this two-day event are in development and will be posted to the registration site as they are available.  If you would like to suggest a program, please contact the Symposium Coordinator (anne@swonlibraries.org) soon, as slots are filling up fast.

TELL YOUR VENDORS—there will be exhibits on the first day of the Symposium.  We need support from the vendors, as well as the information they will be able to add to the event.

Additional program details and the link to register are available here:

NOTE—To help you in your budgeting, we have made this a “single price” event.  Just about everything should be included–from touch down at the airport, to return through airport security!  If you need to add nights to accommodate your travel schedule, or if you need a breakdown of the costs for your local accounting systems, please contact the Symposium Coordinator for those arrangements.  Registration deadline is September 1, 2008.

We look forward to welcoming you (across the river from Cincinnati) to move some more of those mountains of materials.
